Parenting & Parenting Styles

There are four distinct parenting styles: neglectful, permissive, authoritarian, and authoritative. These styles were researched and named by Diana Baumrind.
Neglectful, or uninvolved parents have few demands for their children, and also have very little communication with their child. These parents take care of their children and fulfill their basic needs, however, they are generally absent from the life of their child. In cases that are found to be extreme, a neglectful parent may even ignore the needs of their children.
A permissive parent also makes very few demands of their child. The children of permissive parents are rarely disciplined because their parents have low maturity and self-control expectations. These parents are often seen as "friends" to their children, instead of authority figures.
Authoritarian parents have strict rules fo their children, and a failure to follow these rules results in discipline. The issue with authoritarian parents is they fail to explain their reason for the punishment. These are the parents who respond with "because I said so". They have high demands, but, are largely unresponsive to their children.
Authoritative parents also have rules and guidelines their children are expected to follow. Where they are different from authoritarian parents, is they offer an explanation for any discipline their child may receive. This is a much more fair form of parenting. These parents are responsive to their child and will listen to any questions they may have. The disciplinary tactics of these parents are supportive and not punitive. This was the parenting style of both of my parents, and I believe it is the best style to follow. They were strict, but not too strict. They gave me the freedom to make my own choices, but instilled values in me that would help shape my decisions throughout my life.
As a teacher and a coach, it will be important to understand each of these styles a child has been raised by. I will need to understand the different personalities and characteristics of each of my players and students in order to ensure their proper development. Different individuals will respond to different techniques, so it is important to realize this and use the information in appropriate ways.
