Physical Development
The physical development of the human body begins the moment a sperm cell comes into contact with an unfertilized egg, which then combine to form a zygote.

Once fertilization has occurred, the zygote is in the germinal stage for the next two weeks to allow the implantation of the blastocyst. This stage last roughly two weeks.
After this stage, comes the Embryonic stage. This stage lasts approximately from two weeks after conception to 8 weeks after conception. This is seen as most important period in the womb. During this stage, major body systems are formed, the only thing that is not formed is our skeletal structure. It is very important that during this stage that expecting mothers steer clear of teratogens. These include, but are not limited to, drugs, alcohol, and smoking, second hand or first hand.
The final stage of prenatal development is the fetal stage. This is the period from 8 weeks after conception up until birth. During this period, the fetus will grow its skeletal structure and bones will begin to develop. This is not a quick process, as bones take a long time to grow. Also during the stage, the fetus will respond to sounds, vibrations, movements, mother's emotions and many other things. During this period it is common for mothers to play classical music to soothe their child in the womb, however, the type of music played is not critical. As long as the music is pleasing to the ears.

After the birth of the child, it is important for parents to form physical and emotional bonds with the child. This helps the child feel loved and safe in the arms and presence of their parents.
Post birth development can begin in either a cephalocaudal or a proximodistal pattern. The cephalocaudal pattern is the sequence of development starting with the child being able to lift its own head, and then moving down. Proximodistal, however, is the development starting with the center of the body, and moving outward.
Language wise, a child will begin babbling between three and six months after birth. Around six to nine months, the child will then begin to understand their first words. As the child's recognition progresses, it will then start to understand instructions beginning nine months to a year after birth. Typically, a child will speak his or her first words at ten to fifteen months old.
A major issue the children of today face is obesity. This problem stems from children eating too much and staying indoors all day and playing video games and watching television. These habits over a long period of time make a healthy child a mildly obese child. With the habits still occurring, this child now becomes moderately obese, weighing 50 pounds overweight. At this point, the child will not want to exercise because it has become painful and uncomfortable. This child then grows older and is now an obese adult. This obese adult now has to deal with an issue from their childhood causes asthma, diabetes, and several other health problems. This problem could have been fixed as a child, but because of choices as a child, this child now is suffering as an adult. It is absolutely important that something be done about childhood obesity, in order to ensure a healthier adulthood for these children.
The next stage of development is adolescence. It is in this period that puberty occurs. This is when boys and girls become able to sexually reproduce. Boys and girls alike will grow taller, and fill out their bodies more in order for their body to prepare for the changes that are occurring. During this period, children will begin to struggle with their body image and may develop eating disorders. It is important for parents and teachers alike to know what issues their child or student is facing and be able to properly handle any given situation.
For my teaching and coaching career, physical development will be absolutely vital for me. Depending on what age and grade I am teaching and coaching, I will need to know what my students or players are physically capable of doing. I do not want to push them too far, and ask them to do something that is simply not possible. Knowing the proper timetables for physical development will be very important when it comes to scheduling and administering any workout regimen. Knowing how players should be developing will be key when it comes to keeping my players safe and healthy.
